Vampires – Overpopulation Issue

So what about the overpopulation issue?

If vampires have existed since ancient times, how is the human race still around? If there was 1 vampire on the first day, 2 vampires on the second day, 4 vampires on the 3rd day, and so on, by the 26th day there would be 33,554,432 vampires. In ancient times this might have been more than the entire population of humans. Even if a vampire only converted 1 person every 100 years, after 3300 years, perhaps as long as vampire myths have existed, every human being would be a vampire. I have contructed a chart showing the growth of a vampire population over 34 units. After 34 turns there would be more vampires than the entire current human population, assuming none of them die.

This chart depicts vampire growth per unit.

This chart depicts vampire growth per unit.

So if vampires existed, why isn’t humanity wiped out? There could be a few answers to this:

  1. More vampires die than spread their condition to others.
  2. Converting people is relatively rare, happening no greater than once every 2 centuries per vampire.
  3. Similiar to condition 2, they don’t feed more than once every 2 centuries.
  4. The majority that are converted refuse to feed and commit suicide.

If vampires were able to do what they could in movies by feasting on a village, within days everyone would be a vampire. The statistics were conservative and assume a vampire couldn’t convert more than one person per unit. But they also don’t take into the account that vampires may take time to transform. Conversion rate is not an issue and the standard 1 person becoming a vampire per cycle is taken into account.

  • Traditionally, vampires just sort of happened-they didn’t turn ithers-that’s modern myth. Only a few incidents in New England and the Arnold Paole case had victims being turned.
