Fangs

Vampire fangs are perhaps their most interesting physical characteristics. Usually around an inch and a half long, these things were meant to do some serious damage. In most westernized versions of vampires, the fangs are overdeveloped canines, similiar to those found in carnivorious animals such as dogs. They allow the vampire to pierce the flesh of their victim easily, enabling them to feed on their blood.

There are several interesting theories on how the fangs work. Some speculate that they could deliver a muscle relaxer to the victim, as well as the virus that is thought to have caused vampirism. Others say that the vampire would have to inject the victim with anti-colagulate to keep the blood from clotting when they feed. Perhaps its kind of a cocktail of chemicals that make up the combination of above.

Pale Skin

Pale skin is another common characteristic of vampires, showing their inability to stay in sunlight and their undead demeanor. Since skin pigment in humans is more or less created by interaction with the sun, the lack of interaction is seen. Also when a person dies, their skin is thought to turn very pale. Pale skin is often used in counter-culture gothic groups to imitate the look of the dead, or the vampire.

Longevity

What they lose in not being able to go in the sunlight anymore, they gain with the ability to stop their molecular clocks. Vampires are known to live for centuries or even millennia, as long as their thirst for blood is met. If you have known someone for a long time and they never seem to age, could they really be a vampire? Did you see someone you recognize in an old painting? Maybe they are indeed a vampire, or maybe they just have a similar looking ancestor.

Thirst For Blood

This is why vampires are feared. It isn’t because they have fangs, pale skin, or longevity. They are feared because of what must occur so they can satisfy their thirst. They don’t feed on animals, but people. Their thirst for blood is the magnification of ultimate sin. This is what aligns the vampire with the unholy, the occult and the damned. Without their thirst for blood, vampires are merely superheroes. But, as nice as it would be to have person with bad ass powers on our side, of course they are really villains.

Shapeshifting

Vampires of legends and in books are known to have an array of different superpowers. They ALL have fangs. Most of them have super strength. But some have another very interesting ability. They can TRANSFORM into a something sweet and totally kick your ass. Dracula was well known for being able to transform into a vampire bat. Eastern European legends say that many vampires can take on the shape of wolves, stepping on the boundaries of werewolves.

Flight

The ability to fly or jump long distances is another ability that a vampire might enjoy. They can either transform into an animal or have the ability to take flight in human form, from some unholy gift they were bestowed that gives them built in anti-gravity machines.

Super Strength

Another very fun advantage of being a vampire is that most of them receive super strength. Did you ever want to get out of your car in rush hour traffic and toss the cars in front of you out of your way? Well now you can! Except that whole burning in the sun thing, and not very often is there really bad traffic at night. But hey! If the occasion arises you can do it! And afterwards, there will be a nice little snack waiting for you. Like sardines in a can!
